graphite rings and/or pure graphite rings made by Adtech02022-05-29 18:02:48
Due to its special physical properties graphite is perfectly suited for seals in fittings, pumps and exhaust systems, for example. High temperatures and/or aggressive media pose no problems for graphite rings and/or pure graphite rings made by Adtech. Since the 1970’s we have resolutely continued to further develop our know-how – to perfection. Our unique and extensive inventory of tools is unequalled anywhere on earth, putting us in a position to manufacture and deliver virtually any ring geometry requested by our customers and to do so promptly – in an industrial quality of up to 99.85 % and with a density of between 1.2 and 1.8 g/cm3. Pure graphite rings by Adtech are in use all over the world, protecting people and the environment from problematic media (liquids and gases). Whether infinite, divided or bias-cut: we produce graphite rings in a huge range of sizes. The outside diameters are between three and 1,150 mm; the height is totally variable. Our pure graphite products are available in a variety of typical ring shapes Typical applications of our technology include bonnet gaskets, sometimes referred to as Brettschneider rings. They are provided with inclined surfaces specified by the customer on the inner or outer diameter, and they withstand pressures of up to 700 bar. Our spherical exhaust gaskets are reinforced with a wire mesh and are used by many automobile manufacturers.
The distinctive material features of expanded graphite rings02022-04-18 22:52:17
The distinctive material features of expanded graphite rings include: Low friction coefficient, estimated at a level of 0.1 for wet friction and 0.16 for dry friction Remarkable chemical resistance against most process fluids, including all fluids used in energy generation High resistance to nuclear radiation making them eminently suitable for applications in nuclear engineering Resistance to high temperatures exceeding the resistance of the most common sealing materials Relatively low cost graphite ring High resistance to compression On the negative side, low resistance to tensile and shear forces It is also significant that in terms of the applications where gland packings are used, our knowledge of this material and our experience is the most extensive. Initially in the seventies, the rings were made directly from expanded graphite particles by filling them into a tool or even by forming directly in the device (pump or valve). In this case, a problem occurred related to the low density of the expanded graphite particles and the high compression set. Because of this graphite foils with a higher density of 0.7 – 1 g/cm³ were used to form rings because they are easier to handle. Graphite foil is thus currently the basic intermediate product used in the production of graphite gland packings and graphite seals in general. Such foil is supplied by manufacturers of graphite products in different densities (usually 0.7-1.0 g/cm³), carbon contents (in process seals carbon contents of 95- 99.9% of carbon are applied), in different thicknesses (0.3-1.0 mm) and with various modifying additives. Graphite foil materials can also differ in terms of the content of soluble chlorides, fluorides and sulphur, which have an impact on the development of corrosion, and in the amount of traces of rare earth metals which have an impact on the rate of oxidation. These properties are not always specified by the supplier. While the thickness of the foil or its density may be treated as a purely technological quality, the remaining material characteristics have a fundamental impact on the functionality, durability and operational reliability of a packing.

Continuous casting is a casting method used in high volume production of metals with a constant cross-section. The method uses an open ended graphite die which is surrounded by a copper jacket. Through which is poured molten metal. The graphite mold is typically water cooled. This allows the molten metal to solidify within the die, the custom solid metal form is then extracted from the mold and pulled/passed through rollers and water sprays. This process removes the heat from the metal, and gradually solidifies it. Graphite Ring is a widely used in continuous casting. The die molds are generally produced out of graphite. In these types of applications, the types of graphite used are ISO-Molded types. Small porosities and good machinability are required properties, and ISO-molded graphite has those. In rare instances, where large ingots are produced, extruded graphite is used. There are two types of continuous casting processes, a vertical casting and a horizontal casting. Graphite molds are used in both types of applications. A wide variety of alloys are fabricated using continuous casting in graphite molds. Gray cast irons, copper-nickel alloys, nickel silvers, aluminum bronzes or gold and silver alloys, are just some of the alloys being produced with graphite molds. The coefficient of thermal expansion is an important factor that determines why graphite is used as mold material. The casting mold is a medium with very un-uniform temperatures, from hot inside due to the molten material, to cold on the outside due to the cooling process applied to it. The low coefficient of thermal expansion that graphite exhibits, allows the mold to function without deforming or ****ing. Another very important factor is self-lubrication.. Graphite is a solid lubricant that allows for low friction between the mold and the cast material. Subsequently graphite allows for smooth extraction of the casting. There are various factors determining the lifetime of the mold. From the composition of the casted materials, to the casting temperature, to the cooling rates, all affect the life of the graphite mold. In general, graphite molds can operate continuously in excess of 100 hours. Also, graphite molds can be re-machined to smooth surfaces and used again. The specific graphite grade used is also determined by a multitude of factors. The main factor is the composition of the alloy to be casted. For example, for a gray iron, or a high nickel alloy a graphite resistant to wear is required, while for brass a relative dense graphite with enough open porosity to allow zinc to evaporate, will be a better choice. Designing graphite molds for continuous casting requires taking in consideration all these factors and applying them to your specific application. Grade selection is of the most importance, and should include input from foundry men, graphite manufacturers, and machine shops specialized in machining graphite. Even then, when designing a new system, actual trials could be needed, before an actual graphite grade is selected. Attached is a video showing the precious metal strip casting process using an IRM caster fitted with Semco Carbon graphite components.

carbon graphite ring into the center of the steel band02022-04-12 18:49:14
A client contacted THE LAB needing to heat a steel band to 1000 ºF (538 ºC) and insert a carbon graphite ring into the center of the steel band. THE LAB determined 10 kW, 50-150 kHz induction heating system with a four turn, two-over-two helical coil would be optimal for this induction shrink fitting application. The frequency for this application was 132 kHz. Initial testing was conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part. System power was applied for 14 seconds to reach the target temperature of 1000 ºF (538 ºC). The carbon graphite rings was then inserted and the assembly was allowed to cool which created a strong joint between the two pieces. This achieved the client's time and quality objectives. For this shrink fitting application, induction heating offered several advantages. It delivered rapid heating which saved power and time. It's also a clean source of heat. Induction delivers less heat into the work environment than a torch and takes up less space than an oven. Induction is also a highly repeatable heating process, ideal for high volume applications such as this one. Finally, induction can be easily integrated into existing production lines thanks to its size and movable workheads that can be placed a distance from the power supply. THE LAB has a significant amount of experience with induction shrink fitting applications like this one. Visit our induction shrink fitting page to learn about other shrink fitting applications tested by THE LAB. And, to learn more about free application testing, visit our page with more information about THE LAB or contact us today to get the process started.
