Is there a deadline to close your position when you sell short?

I have been trading in equities for a while to grow my savings but this time I have always been taking the long position . In the current financial volatility 'm thinking diversify my portfolio by taking short positions in certain stocks . MedlinePlus

I know what is a short sale , but I'm a little confused by the way it really works so here I am MedlinePlus

short selling per share , then the share rises what you are stuck with this waste of paper . so I was thinking , is there a date by which you have to close your position and realize this loss or can rest easy as in long positions and wait for the share to fall so you get a benefit in instead?
