an energy source for food ( chain weight , spring, battery, mains)
and control oscillator to give regular pulses when connected to the power source (pendulum and exhaust , quartz crystal oscillator and an electronic circuit )
against adding the pulses in seconds , minutes , and then then hours (a series of gears, a microchip timer )
indicator that shows when the easy to understand how (hands in the face of a clock , the numbers on a digital display )
